Research in Global Mental Health

The consequences on global mental health due to COVID-19 will be significant and cause long-term impact on the global burden of disease. Pregnant women are particularly vulnerable due to the state of partial immune suppression. Therefore, the COVID-19 pandemic may have serious effects for pregnant women. Besides the physical vulnerability, maternal mental health has significant influence on the child. In view of evidence of in utero maternal stress, maternal cortisol levels influence behavioral outcomes in the child, especially if mothers suffer from post traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). Pregnant and postpartum women exposed to the global pandemic may developed PTSD in response.
